International Institute for Theory-Based Interventions: Intervention Evaluation

in

Note: You may register for this course separately or in conjunction with the Research Intensive Workshop

When:

February 22-24, 2010

Where:

Arizona State University
Downtown Phoenix Campus
College of Nursing & Health Innovation
500 N. 3rd St.
Phoenix, AZ 85004

Who should attend:

This institute is designed for individuals interested in exploring methodologies for the design of studies aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of theory based interventions. Group discussion will foster individuals’ understanding of the principles underlying different quantitative and qualitative methods, and exposure to practical hints / lessons for conducting the evaluation.

Workshop Focus:

Demonstrating the effectiveness of theory based interventions is pre-requisite for implementing them in day-to-day practice. Demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions demands a systematic and careful evaluation that is guided by the theory underlying the interventions. The evaluation is designed to determine: who would most benefit from the intervention, delivered at what dose and in what mode; and how does it work to produce the intended immediate (short term) and ultimate (long term) outcomes.

Overall Objective/Goal:

To discuss methodologies for the design of studies aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of theory based interventions. Group discussion will foster individuals’ understanding of the principles underlying different quantitative and qualitative methods, and exposure to practical hints / lessons for conducting the evaluation.

Session Topics:

  • Elements of the intervention theory that guide the design of the evaluation study
  • Strengths and limitations of the conventional randomized controlled trial and the alternative pragmatic or practical trials in demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions
  • Utility of partially randomized clinical trials in examining the effectiveness of interventions
  • Strategies for monitoring fidelity of treatment implementation and for assessing intervention dose and adherence
  • Issues related to measurement and analysis of immediate and ultimate outcomes

Benefits:

  • Content from expert faculty
  • Networking with other researchers
  • Consultation on your own research
  • Comprehensive resource
