1. Who is eligible?

Any full-time American Indian/Alaska Native students in the Upper Division Nursing Program for the BSN, RN – BSN students, Ph.D students and DNP students.

2. What does the scholarship provide?

Up to $5,000 per year for two years for tuition, books, etc., for undergraduate students and
Up to $5,000 per year for three years for tuition, books, etc., for graduate students.

3. What is a requirement of the scholarship?

Each applicant is to write an essay on courage (one page, double spaced).  The scholarship recipients are also required to attend the Courage Awards Banquet held in the spring semester.

4. How do I apply for the Tempe Sports Authority Foundation scholarship?

Read and complete the application which is located on the bottom of this page . Be sure to attach a typed biographical statement, goals statement and a statement on your financial obligations. REQUIRED: An essay on Courage and a Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB). All students must separately apply to ASU, College of Nursing and Health Innovation for admission into the Upper Division Nursing Program (BSN), RN-BSN program, PhD or DNP and meet the set criteria. Awarding of the Tempe Sports Authority Foundation Scholarship is strictly based on the decision of the ASUN Advisory Committee recommendation to the Tempe Sports Authority Foundation, the TEMPE SPORTS AUTHORITY FOUNDATION, the applicant’s admission status into the appropriate Nursing Program, and available scholarship funds.

5. Where can I get the ASUN scholarship application?

The application is located on the bottom of this page or you may ask an ASUN Staff member for a copy.  The ASUN office is located in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation building, 500 N 3rd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004-0698 on the first floor, Room 128.  The staff will assist with any questions you may have about the scholarship and the program.

1. Who is eligible?

Any full-time American Indian/Alaska Native students in the Upper Division Nursing Program for the BSN, RN – BSN students and DNP students.

2. What does the scholarship provide?

Maximum of $17,000 per student over two years ($8,500 per year) for tuition and books.

3. What does the student have to do in return for receiving the Laveda Huitt Carpenter scholarship?

Upon graduation, the student will agree to a two year service obligation working with American Indians/Alaska Natives.

4. What does service obligation mean?

When a scholarship student graduates, she/he will look for and interview for nursing employment with:

  • the Indian Health Service (IHS) or
  • a program conducted under a contract entered into under the Indian Self-Determination Act (tribe) or
  • an urban Indian organization assisted under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act or
  • The Indian Health Board.

5. Will I get paid during my service obligation?

Yes. The graduate will be hired and receive full benefits/salary as would any employee of similar status.  The Scholarship recipient has promised to seek employment in an agency that serves American Indian people.

6. How do I apply for the Leveda Huitt Carpenter scholarship?
