Learning Resource Centers - Clinical Labs
The Clinical Labs at the LRC provides a learning environment for students to practice/master nursing skills in a simulation of various health care settings. Students have the opportunity for experiential hands on practice. This is provided through formal classes, scheduled practice times and open lab sessions.
Requirements
- Faculty must provide a detailed list of equipment, models and disposable supplies needed for each lab experience at least 1 month prior to the beginning of the semester.
- Professional, safe behavior will be expected when participating in the clinical simulation lab.
Safety
- When invasive procedures are done on another person in the clinical labs, safety devices will be used.
- Students may practice invasive procedures only under the direct supervision of a faculty or LRC staff member.
- Approved sharps containers will be used to dispose of all sharps immediately after use, as well as any materials contaminated with bodily fluids according to OSHA guidelines.
- If faculty assess that a student needs additional assistance in the lab, the faculty can complete the Referral for Skill Review Form, submit to the lab coordinator and send the student in for remediation. The process is described on the form, which is located on the LRC web site.
- The Labs are not latex free but do provide non-latex/powder-free non-sterile gloves. Non-latex powder-free sterile gloves will be provided to latex allergic students/faculty as needed with adequate notice.
Lab Hours
- Open clinical lab hours are based on campus and semester schedule. A Clinical Lab Coordinator is available to assist student's review and practice during open lab hours. If students need individual assistance, individual appointments can be set up by calling or e-mailing the lab coordinator for the specific campus.
