ASU Nutrition Programs Celebrate 100 Years

The Nutrition Program 100 Year Celebration on November 14 was a great success.

About 70 faculty, students, and alumni gathered to visit and reminisce. Attendees browsed through a pictorial history of nutrition and dietetics spanning the past 100 years. The display included wonderful pictures from the ASU archives depicting the early 1900 domestic science kitchens and the ASU garden plot tended by the domestic science students. A contest to match 10 food products with the year they were introduced kept conversations lively as attendees debated the entrees that included Crisco and Pop Tarts.

Assistant Dean Linda Vaughan discussed program highlights from the past; Program Director Carol Johnston told the crowd how the program is meeting the challenges of a New American University today; and Dean Bernadette Melnyk discussed the program’s future as it moves downtown to join the College of Nursing and Health Innovation. There was plenty of good food (courtesy of Sprouts) for all.

We look forward to the next 100 years with anticipation and enthusiasm.
