Early Career Nursing Scientists Focus on Obesity and Related Health Disparities

- May 5, 2023
The mission of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is to, “lead nursing research to solve pressing health challenges and inform practice and policy—optimizing health and advancing health equity into the future.” Supporting the next generation of nursing scientists is essential for accomplishing this mission and the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation is answering this call. Edson has developed a robust training and mentoring environment that attracts talented early career nursing scientists from diverse backgrounds. Three of these scholars and their research addressing obesity and related health disparities were highlighted during a symposium at the Western Institute of Nursing's annual conference in April. Eyitayo Owolabi, PhD, RN and Morgan Braxton, PhD, RN both postdoctoral fellows in Edson and Timian Godfrey, DNP, a doctoral student in Edson’s Nursing and Healthcare Innovation PhD program discussed their individual journeys and how their research is aligned with NINR’s mission to advance nursing science. Drs. Owolabi, Braxton and Godfrey are shining examples of how nurses can leverage the unique knowledge and perspectives inherent to the discipline to address some of the most critical public health challenges and promote health equity.
Congratulations to Tayo, Morgan, and Timian, you make us all look good!
