An App-Based, Precision Medicine Approach to Optimize Long-Term CPAP Adherence and Quality of Life

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common sleep related disorder affecting 9-38% of the general population. Despite effective therapies that increase positive airway pressure, consistent and long-term use of CPAP remains a challenge for many. Unmanaged obstructed sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime fatigue and sleepiness, memory and mood swings and cardiovascular problems.

Dr. Megan E. Petrov, Associate Professor in CHPDP has been awarded the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation Strategic Research Award to be executed over the next 3 years. Drs. Megan E. Petrov and Matthew P. Buman will co-lead this effort, along with their team and they develop personalized and precise interventions that will lead to long-term adoption of CPAP.  Their work will leverage existing data from their SleepWell24 feasibility trial which developed and studied a smartphone application for patients with obstructive sleep apnea which was funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute for Nursing Research between 2016-2018.

Dr. Petrov, a licensed clinical psychologist and associate professor at ASU in the Edson College of Nursing & Health Innovation, is an expert in behavioral sleep medicine, health behavior change, and outcomes assessment.  Dr. Buman is a behavioral scientist with expertise in designing and evaluating technology-mediated (i.e., apps, wearable biosensors) for health behavior change and is a Professor and Director of Precision Health Research Initiatives at ASU in the College of Health Solutions.
