Biography

My name is Lannie Dewberry.  I have been an RN since 1978, earned my BSN from ASU in 1978, and earned a certificate in school nursing from the University of Phoenix in 1994.  I have been a community nurse for the majority of my career, spending 34 years as a school nurse, serving student populations from preschool to 12th grade.  As a school nurse, I worked with traditional populations as well as special needs children.  I was a Medicaid provider, the school liaison for St. Mary's food bank and a member of the teams providing Denver Developmental testing for preschool age children and Individual Education Plans for special needs children.  At the high school and elementary school levels, I was a group therapy facilitator for our district's Chemical Abuse Prevention program.

I also worked in several other areas of community nursing including industrial nursing at Intel Corporation, emergency nursing at Sidewinder Speedway, (extricating and assessing race car drivers after accidents), camp nursing with Troop 264-Boy Scouts of America, and as band nurse with Ironwood High School Marching Band.  In addition, in my early career I was an ICU nurse, working in neurological, pediatric, surgical, neonatal and burn intensive care units.  I worked in several other areas of nursing as well, including emergency department, obstetrics, newborn and step-down nurseries, medical-surgical, rehab and long-term care.  I also worked on a kidney unit, caring for transplant patients and doing peritoneal dialysis.

I have been a clinical nursing instructor at Grand Canyon University and Arizona State University in the areas of community and population health, health assessment, geriatrics, long term care, and nursing practicum.

I have twice been awarded the Pursuit of Excellence Award by the Arizona State Governor’s Office for outstanding achievement in practice as a Maricopa County public school nurse.
