Research Interests

(1) The risks of long sleep.  Dozens of epidemiologic studies have established that both short sleep duration (less than 6 hours) and long sleep duration (8 hours or more) are associated with mortality and multiple morbidities.  Although the risks of long sleep have been greater and more consistent than the risks of short sleep, we are one of the only groups that are experimentally studying long sleep.

(2) Nonpharmacologic means of improving sleep and mental health. We have conducted research examining the effects of exercise and bright light on insomnia, sleep apnea, and PTSD.
