From Lima to Machu Picchu: Exploring Healthcare, Culture, and Ethics in Peru
The first study-abroad program by the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, From Lima to Machu Picchu: Exploring Healthcare, Culture, and Ethics in Peru exposes students to the real world health challenges and opportunities that face communities beyond the United States. For four weeks, accepted students will travel through Peru, from large cities like Lima to small communities, and engage in service learning to learn more about traditional and rural health practices. Through this program, students develop a stronger relationship with the community they are serving, and gain deeper understanding of providing health care to diverse populations.
Students will have the unique opportunity to experience urban, rural, and traditional health care settings. During their time in Lima, the largest city in Peru, students will be introduced to a more modernized health system as they learn about Peruvian culture and ethical concepts. Following this experience, time in Cusco will provide opportunities to visit smaller communities and more traditional health care practices and community-based health interventions. Additionally, while in Cusco, students will be visiting the world-famous Incan ruins of Machu Picchu where they will learn about some of the indigenous history of Peru.
In addition to being exposed to a new culture and environment for health care, students have two options to earn six credits of coursework. The first option has students completing HCR 230: Culture and Health (general studies, C&G), and HCR 210: Clinical Healthcare Ethics (general studies, humanities). The second option is for HCR 498: transcultural Health (general studies).
From Lima to Machu Picchu: Exploring Healthcare, Culture, and Ethics in Peru was developed by Aliria Munoz, clinical professor with the College of Nursing and Health Innovation. Her work was aided by donors Dr. John and Suzanne Hensing, who created the Hensing Scholarship to enable students from all economic backgrounds to study cross-cultural health care education.
