A time to celebrate, a time to listen - Honoring nurses everywhere

Each May, during National Nurses Month, we pause to recognize and celebrate the heart of health care: our nurses. It’s a time to honor the dedication, skill, compassion, and resilience of nurses, not only in the face of extraordinary challenges, but in the everyday moments that often go unseen.

This year, our theme at Edson College is simple but powerful: “Everyone deserves to be heard.”

In hospitals, clinics, homes, and communities across the country, nurses serve as the trusted bridge between patients and the broader health care system. You don’t just provide care, you listen. You advocate. You witness. You hear what others might miss.

At the same time, nurses need to be heard, too.

Whether it’s a student nurse finding their voice in simulation labs, a bedside nurse advocating for policy change, or a nurse educator guiding future leaders, the perspective matters. Nurses’ insights shape patient outcomes, improve systems and strengthen teams. When nurses are heard, health care becomes more effective, just and compassionate.

As we celebrate this month, I invite you to reflect on the many ways you use your voice, for your students, your patients, your peers, and yourselves. I also encourage everyone - administrators, policymakers, colleagues - to create more spaces where nurses are not just present, but truly heard.
