Fundamentals of Healthcare for Veterans

One in 10 Americans is a veteran, yet only 33% of those veterans are seen by the Veterans Administration for healthcare. The majority (67%) of the veteran population receive healthcare services provided by non-veteran community-based healthcare providers. These community-based healthcare providers require education that addresses the uniqueness of the military and veteran experience; social, political and economic factors affective veteran healthcare; and the healthcare needs of veterans, military families, and the veteran population.

This interprofessional, non-credit course is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists and social workers.

Online delivery allows for self-paced learning using a variety of interactive learner-centric teaching/learning methods.

Overall Learning Objectives

• Engage interprofessional healthcare teams to promote ethical, quality, and safe care for veteran and military patients, families, populations, or agencies.
• Apply a professional, ethical, caring, and culturally sensitive approach when working with veteran and military patients, families, populations, or agencies.
• Integrate patient care technologies to improve veteran and military patient, family, population health and wellness outcomes.
• Integrate patient perceptions of how military service has impacted their long-term health and engagement in multiple care systems into their care plans.
• Incorporate evidence-based theoretical frameworks to address the multiple system needs of veteran and military patients, families, or populations to improve veteran health and wellness.
• Advocate for veteran and military patients, families, populations, in local and national care systems.
• Advocate for veteran and military patients, families, or populations to improve veteran health and wellness by assisting them in getting the services and benefits needed.

Participants will receive a certificate confirming their completion and awarding them 45 continuing education credits.

Accreditation

Continuing education is provided by the ASU Office of Interprofessional Continuing Health Education (OICHE), which is accredited by JAICE (Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education). This joint partnership allows OICHE to provide continuing education for the following professions: medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology and social work.

	In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. The ASU Office of Interprofessional Continuing Health Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
	Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibly for the content of the programs.
	As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Arizona State University is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Arizona State University maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.
