Midday Mindfulness: Igniting Human Connection

Midday Mindfulness: Igniting Human Connection

Join the Center for Mindfulness at ASU for today’s Midday Mindfulness session with Sophia Town! In this workshop, we will discuss simple ways to ignite human connection in your life. We are all looking for deeper human connections. Now more than ever, we need to find ways to decrease our sense of disconnect and isolation. The pandemic has amplified this disconnect as our days are now shaped around separateness. However, this connection crisis existed long before the terms “social distancing” and “Zoom fatigue” meant anything to us. While we are connected superficially to everyone in our cybersphere, we are yearning for something deeper.

Sophia Town: I am a professor, researcher, and wisdom-seeker.

My research focuses on leadership and human flourishing in the context of an increasingly complex world. This work reflects an interdisciplinary spirit, drawing on social science and spirituality, to make sense of human phenomena and address pressing leadership problems.

My current projects explore how leaders and organization members navigate complexity with wisdom and insight. Central topics include discursive leadership, emotion, organizational paradox, and mindfulness.

As an educator, my classes are guided by the question: How can we use business education to develop compassionate leaders and build a flourishing world? These courses are grounded in a transformational pedagogy—including critical reflexivity, experiential learning, and mindfulness-based approaches—which aims to move students from knowing to becoming.

In addition to my professional role, I serve as a research consultant for ASU’s Center for Mindfulness, Compassion, & Resilience, and a Research Fellow for the International Humanistic Management Association. My work has been supported by the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics and the Transformation Project. In 2018, I was named the Jeanne Lind Herberger Fellow for transformative scholarship.
