The Age-Friendly University Global Network

Ten Principles of an Age-Friendly University

We are living longer than ever before. By 2034, people over age 65 will outnumber those under 18 for the first time in U.S. history. These demographic changes will have a profound impact on the future of education. As engines of research and innovation, higher education institutions are uniquely positioned to re-imagine education across the lifespan.

To answer this call, Arizona State University is leading a global initiative to highlight universities' unique role in responding to the challenges and opportunities of our aging society as the Secretariat of the Age-Friendly University Global Network. In this role, ASU is working with institutions of higher education across the globe to promote an inclusive approach to healthy and active aging.

The Age-Friendly University Global Network is a consortium of higher education institutions committed to promoting positive and healthy aging and enhancing the lives of older members of the global community through innovative educational programs, research agendas, curriculum development, online education, health and wellness activities, arts and culture programs, and civic engagement opportunities.

Housed in the Center for Innovation in Healthy and Resilient Aging in the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the Age-Friendly University Global Secretariat is the coordinating center and leader of the network.

Through our research, curriculum, community engagement, and learning opportunities for individuals across the lifespan, Arizona State University has positioned itself as an international leader of age-friendly initiatives in education, research, and innovation that, in turn, will promote a greater, more engaged university.
