The ASU Student Chapter of the Gerontology Society of America

Mission: Foster excellence, innovation and collaboration to advance aging research, education, practice and policy.
Vision: Meaningful lives as we age.

Our society thrives when people of all ages share their creativity, skills and energy. Each generation adds new ideas that help us solve problems and build stronger communities. As we live longer and healthier lives, we gather momentum, adding experiences and insights that power progress. This momentum fuels innovation, leadership and collaboration, helping us move forward together.

By joining the ASU Student Chapter of the Gerontological Society of America, you join peers who are shaping this momentum into action and become part of one of the largest professional societies in the field! Since 1945, GSA has promoted education, research and advocacy in aging for professionals, recent graduates and students. Together, you can advance research, influence policy and celebrate the dynamic contributions of older adults.

Benefits of joining

Join the GSA Student Chapter and turn your interest in aging into impact. As a member, you’ll plug into rich professional development, real-world projects and a community that opens doors long after graduation. You will have the opportunity to build hands-on leadership skills (i.e., facilitating meetings and shaping programs for recruitment and innovation), strengthening your personal network and developing your voice as an advocate for aging adults.

Undergraduate members also receive free membership in the Gerontological Society of America and its Emerging Scholars and Professional Organization!

Sigma Phi Omega, Psi Chapter

Sigma Phi Omega is the International Academic Honor and Professional Society in Gerontology. Founded in 1980, SPO focuses on the multifaceted aspects of aging, promoting scholarship, professionalism, friendship and services for older persons by recognizing exemplary achievement in gerontology/aging studies and related fields. SPO recognizes scholarship, leadership and service in the field of aging by connecting students, faculty and professionals through its chapters worldwide.

Founded in spring 2021, the Psi Chapter of SPO at ASU was the first chapter in Arizona and is one of only 50 chapters worldwide.

Membership in SPO signifies a commitment to the field of gerontology. It also opens the door to engagement and collaboration, locally and globally. For students and professionals alike, it offers a platform for connecting and networking with individuals who share similar interests.

Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at ASU (as a major, minor or certificate) in gerontology, aging studies or a related field with an emphasis on aging as part of their coursework. Membership is also open to alumni of ASU in gerontology, aging studies or a related field with an emphasis on aging. To be eligible, students must have completed a semester in their program, have an overall grade point average of at least 3.30 (undergraduate) or 3.50 (graduate) on a 4.0 scale, and have a commitment to leadership and achievement in gerontology, aging and their related fields of professional study. Additional details on membership can be found on the national website.
