Clinical Nursing Application for Advancement

Complete and submit to apply for Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovations’ summer/fall 2024 clinical nursing programs. For more information about the clinical nursing program, please refer to the First Degree Guide and the Postbaccalaureate Guide.

First-degree applicants are students who are working towards completion of their first bachelor’s degree and will not have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution when the summer/fall 2024 clinical nursing program begins.

Postbaccalaureate applicants are students who have obtained or will obtain a bachelor’s degree from another U.S. regionally accredited institution or accredited international institution before the clinical nursing program begins in summer/fall 2024, and who are seeking to apply for a second bachelor’s degree from ASU.

Traditional BSN Prelicensure Clinical Nursing Program

The Traditional BSN is a full-time four-semester program requiring a total of 63 credit hours. Students complete 15-16 credit hours per semester, including theory, lab and clinical rotations. Applicants are considered via direct admission or the competitive application process.

Accelerated BSN Prelicensure Clinical Nursing Program

The Accelerated BSN is a 12-month, full-time program requiring a total of 50 credit hours over three consecutive terms (spring, summer, fall), including theory, lab and clinical rotations. Applicants are considered via the competitive application process.

  1. Must have a minimum of 70 credit hours completed before the program begins.
  2. Must complete all general studies (excluding upper-division Literacy and upper-division Humanities/Social Behavioral Science) before the program begins.

Postbaccalaureate applicants should also apply for the MS Nursing (Entry to Nursing Practice) program.

There are many settings in which nursing students gain experience — hospitals, nursing homes, public health and community agencies, private homes, school settings and clinics. Class and clinical schedules will vary from semester to semester, and even within semesters. Additionally, because clinical placement isn’t determined until each semester begins, faculty and staff will be unable to provide information about the clinical schedule in advance. Clinical and classroom experiences may be scheduled during the daytime, evening or on weekends seven days a week and maybe for as long as 12-hour time periods. Due to the high demand and limited supply of clinical practice experiences, we require flexibility in scheduling these learning experiences.

It’s highly recommended that applicants review their application materials with an Edson College advisor before submission to ensure all items have been completed successfully. Refer to step 6 on the Clinical Nursing Advancement website.

Cohort Ranking

Cohorts may be offered at the following campuses: Downtown Phoenix, WestPolytechnic and the Lake Havasu location. Indicate your cohort preference by ranking the options below. You must select a first, second and third choice.

Each selection must be different. You cannot select the same choice multiple times. Placement in your preferred cohort is not guaranteed.

If you are not eligible for the Accelerated BSN, do not select this cohort as an option.

Phoenix Children’s (PCH) Team - Supplemental Application

All clinical nursing students are placed on teams to complete their clinical requirements. As part of an alliance between Phoenix Children’s and the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation at ASU, Edson College is offering a team for students interested in pediatric nursing. Students will complete the prelicensure nursing curriculum at ASU while participating in clinical hours at Phoenix Children’s. Although this information is subject to change, we expect to have PCH teams for the following cohorts: summer at the Downtown Phoenix campus, fall at the Polytechnic campus and fall at the West Valley campus.

To apply for the pediatric cohort team, please complete the supplemental application using this Google form (click here). The deadline to apply is February 1, 2024 by 11:59 p.m. This supplemental application is optional and only for students interested in the pediatric team.

Selection for the PCH cohort is decided by faculty review following determination of advancement status. Selected students will not be notified until all advanced students are notified of their team placement.

Non-Academic Items Required for Advancement

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)

Applicants are allowed one attempt at the TEAS per application cycle unless a failing score below 58.7% is earned. If a student earns less than 58.7% one retest is permitted, but the student must wait a minimum of 30 days between tests.

Health and Safety Requirements

Applicants must create a CastleBranch account by February 1, 2024. The requirements must be approved and completed in CastleBranch by March 1, 2024, except for the drug/alcohol screening, criminal background check and the statement of health clearance. Applicants who do not meet these stated deadlines will be considered “late applicants” and will only be advanced if requirements are met and space is available.

Students identified for advancement and students with alternate status must complete the remaining health and safety requirements (i.e., drug/alcohol screening, criminal background check and statement of health clearance) by March 15, 2024 to maintain eligibility.
