A randomized-controlled trial to test the efficacy of a culturally grounded, community-based diabetes prevention program to increase insulin sensitivity and weight-specific quality of life in 160 obese Latino youth.
This project will continue a program of research investigating the relationships among alcohol consumption, sexual victimization history, and STI/HIV-related risk taking in young adult women. The original project investigated the influence of women's alcohol intoxication, sexual victimization history, and partner characteristics on women's HIV-related sexual decision making through two alcohol administration experiments. It will examine the daily influence of emotional states and emotion regulation strategies on alcohol consumption and sexual risk behavior.
This study will demonstrate that community health workers (CHW), supervised by public health nurses, can deliver a home-based obesity prevention intervention to low-income Mexican and Mexican-American women and children in a major urban area. The CHW will work with WIC clients to support them in breastfeeding their infants and teach them about feeding and caring for their infants.
Regular screening facilitates the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC), the second leading cause of cancer death, and contributes to the reduction of CRC morbidity and mortality, but the hardest-to-reach patients are still under-screened.

The USDA Center for Collaborative Research on WIC Nutrition Education Innovations at the USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine is funded by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. The USDA CNRC WIC Center is funding four innovative WIC nutrition education projects that required a partnership between a university-based researcher and a state or local Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The grants are designed to test creative approaches to WIC nutrition education.
This study is focused on reviewing 39 schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania that were part of a previous research study that was conducted five years ago where a drug prevention intervention called “Keepin’ It Real” was implemented by following-up with the principals on issues of sustainability, in order to examine whether they were able to keep the program going. If so, what challenges have they encounter and, if not, what prevented them from sustaining this program?
The proposed project plans to use a community- based participatory (CBPR) approach to capitalize on the existing partnership and enhance it to address family obesity and obesity-related behaviors in the African American community This partnership will greatly expand the knowledge base for conducting community-based participatory research with faith-based communities.
